How much does a sales tax permit cost by state?
Most states issue sales tax permits for free, including California, New York, and Texas. A few states charge nominal fees up to $50. Alabama is the exception: it can require a security deposit equal to three times your estimated monthly tax liability, refundable after 24–36 months of compliant filing.
Most sales tax permits are free. The vast majority of states issue permits at no cost as part of their online registration process. A handful charge small fees, and one (Alabama) has a security deposit requirement for some out-of-state sellers.

States with nominal fees
A few states charge a small one-time registration fee. These fees are nominal (typically under $50) and are paid at the time of registration. The exact fee can change; always verify the current amount on the state DOR’s website before registering.
States that have historically charged registration fees include Connecticut, Hawaii, and New Mexico. If a state registration portal displays a fee during the application process, that’s the official amount for the current period.
Alabama: security deposit requirement
Alabama is the notable exception. The Alabama Department of Revenue may require an advance security deposit from out-of-state sellers based on their estimated monthly sales tax liability. The deposit formula is:
- Three times the estimated average monthly tax liability
For a seller with $1,000/month in Alabama tax liability, the deposit would be $3,000. The deposit is refundable after a defined period of compliant filing, typically 24 to 36 consecutive months of on-time returns.
The deposit requirement applies primarily to sellers with meaningful Alabama revenue. Sellers with minimal Alabama sales typically don’t trigger it, but the assessment happens at registration, not before. Budget for the possibility if Alabama is a significant market for you.
SST registration: always free
SST unified registration through a Certified Service Provider costs nothing. The 24 SST member states compensate CSPs directly for handling compliance, there’s no cost passed to sellers for the registration itself.
Renewal fees
Almost no states charge renewal fees for sales tax permits, because most permits don’t have an expiration date. The few states that require periodic renewal (Iowa is one) typically don’t charge for it: the renewal is just a confirmation that the permit remains active.
