What registration looks like without SST

Without SST enrollment, registering in multiple states means doing it one at a time:

• Each state has its own Department of Revenue portal
• Each has its own registration form and required information
• Processing times range from same-day (some states) to 4–8 weeks (California)
• Some states charge a permit fee ($10–$100); others don’t
• Some states require a physical permit to be mailed; others are purely digital

Registering in 10 non-SST states means 10 separate registration processes, 10 separate confirmation timelines, and 10 sets of account credentials to manage.

What SST unified registration does

When you enroll in the SST program through a Certified Service Provider, your CSP submits a single application to the SST Governing Board through the Central Registration System. That application covers every SST member state where you have nexus.

The Governing Board processes the application and notifies the relevant states. Each SST state creates your account. Your CSP manages the confirmation and begins handling compliance in those states from your registration effective date.

You don’t submit anything directly to individual SST states. Your CSP handles the process.

What unified registration doesn’t cover

SST registration covers the 24 SST member states. For non-SST states — California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and others, you still register with each state directly. Your CSP may help facilitate those registrations, but there’s no unified system covering non-SST states.

Registration vs. permit

SST enrollment creates your registration in member states: the equivalent of having a sales tax permit in each. You don’t receive a separate paper permit from each SST state in most cases. Your CSP has confirmation of your active registration status, and the state’s records show you as a registered seller.

When your nexus expands

If you cross the economic nexus threshold in a new SST state after your initial enrollment, you can add that state to your registration. Your CSP submits an updated registration to add the new state. You don’t restart the entire process, it’s an amendment to your existing SST registration.
